In this crazy world that we live in we tend to stop and forget to do simple things for ourselves. Simple, pampering things, like indulging in a daily skin care regimen that not only makes us feel better, but takes care of our skin and helps slow down the effects of aging. Some people already do this on a daily basis, while others find it a chore. In reality, simple everyday skin care takes no longer than the same amount of time it takes you to brush your teeth. If you are already participating in a regimen to take care of your body - such as eating healthy, drinking plenty of water, exercising, and getting rest - then adding a skin care routine should be a piece of cake.

Every morning and evening you should take the time to wash and dry your face. Washing in the morning helps remove any oil build-up that occurred overnight as well as dirt that your skin may have picked up off of your bed linens while you were sleeping. Washing your face at night before bed removes make-up, dirt, and pollution that are on your skin, as well as any oil build-up. You want to use skin care products that are natural based if possible so that your skin doesn't wind up with a chemical build-up. This may not always be possible, so chose your skin care products wisely.

The best way to get great looking skin is to follow a few steps that will not take a long time to accomplish when you get up and when you go to bed: cleanse; tone; hydrate; and, once a week, exfoliate. When you cleanse, or wash your face, use a gentle cleanser that will clean your skin without drying it out or making it feel like there's soap left on it. It should be free or sulphates and chemical fragrances that will irritate the skin. The proper method of washing is to dampen your skin with warm water, apply only as much of the cleanser as needed to do the job into the palm of your hand, and then rub into your skin in circles from the centre of your face towards the outer edge. Rinse thoroughly and then pat dry with a clean towel. Patting your face dry will help keep any dirt or pollutants on the towel from rubbing into your pores.

Once you have cleansed your skin, you will want to exfoliate it once a week. If it's not the week to exfoliate, then you would move on to toning. If it is your week to exfoliate, then you want to use a gentle exfoliating or microdermabrasion scrub. A good scrub will have microcrystals in it that sloughs off the dead skin cells and surface debris. Apply it to damp skin working in small areas of the face in circular motions with your fingertips. Avoid the eyes and then rinse thoroughly with water. Your skin will fell tingly and rejuvenated.

Toning and the use of toner helps remove any last traces of make-up, cleanser, or exfoliator, and helps balance the naturally pH of your skin. It is prepping the skin for the moisturizer and a good toner should be alcohol free and should not dry your skin out. If your toner is drying your skin, you need to switch to a new toner. Apply toner with a clean cotton ball by stroking it over your face. Some toner's come in a spritzer bottle in which you would just spray it on and let it dry naturally.

Cleansing, exfoliating, and toning are the first two to three steps of a good morning and evening face washing routine. The last step is hydrating. If you use the proper moisturizer - and you may have to try a few before you get the best one for you skin - it will help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Use a moisturizer that is free of artificial fragrances and includes ingredients such as Jojoba oil, Aloe, and Vitamin E. If your skin can handle it, you can even use a moisturizer that contains alpha-hydroxy acids. Apply it immediately after toning and make sure you rub into you neck as well as your face. Use a moisturizing eye cream around the eyes and eyelids, and if you really want to help reduce the visible signs of aging, use an anti-aging serum around the eyes, lips, and necks before applying your moisturizer.
